ANTIPOLO - The change of name hasn’t resulted into a change of fortune yet for the squad of coach Pido Jarencio as Northport’s debut in the PBA Governors Cup left a lot to be desired.
Not only did the Batang Pier drop a 123-107 defeat at the hands of the NLEX Road Warriors, injuries also continue to pile up for the already depleted squad.
With Stanley Pringle suiting up for the Philippines in the Asian Games and Sean Anthony set to miss a few games with a calf injury of his own – two more rotation guys for the Batang Pier went down as Nico Elorde and Jeric Teng succumbed to separate injuries in their loss.
Both players went down on separate incidents in the third period, with Teng being taken out with a calf injury while Elorde suffered what looked like a back injury after a bad fall.
They never returned to the game.
“Wala talaga e. Kahit anong gawin ko, unang una, namiss namin yung dalawa e si Stanley and Sean. For sure, baka mga September okay na yung dalawa. Mga September 1,” said Jarencio.
“Ang masakit pa, si Elorde and Teng. Si Teng mukhang matatagal. Yung kay Elorde, likod, nakakatakot. Yung kay Jeric, yung calf parang may pumitik. Si Elorde yung bagsak, ngayon di makatayo. Kala namin okay lang, pero ngayon di makatayo,” he added.
But Jarencio offered no excuse in the loss, especially with the way NLEX shot the ball, shooting 53 percent from the field and making 15 three pointers all in all.
“NLEX played very well, they’re making their shots wala na kaming magagawa e. Everybody’s making their shots. Kami naman, di makadepensa,” Jarencio conceded.
“Alam mo naman pag di ka makadepensa, di ka makashoot, frustrations come in. Lahat e. Parang yung mundo ang bigat na. Basta look forward and positive lang. Pag balik nung dalawa baka mag iba na.”
There’s still reason to be positive for Jarencio especially when his two stars in Pringle and Anthony return to action.
With import Rashad Woods putting on a hell of a performance in his debut with 42 points, 12 rebounds, and eight assists – Jarencio is confident that they can finally get rolling the moment he gets his stars back.
“Siyempre frustrated din yung tao. Nung dumating siya, andun si Sean and Stanley in practice., We played against Magnolia (in tune-up) naglaro si Stanley with Rashad kaya nakita niya na, positive siya maganda ang takbo,” Jarencio explained.
“Alam mo naman yung dalawa, si Stanley nagpapagaling ng kasama e. Nadadala niya. Yung defense nacocollapse sa kanya. For now, siyempre, wala e. Kailangan magstep up talaga yung players e.”
