Guiao looking to shake up practice as slumping NLEX seeks road to recovery

YENG Guiao and his NLEX staff had to take one long look at their situation after a fourth straight loss in the PBA Philippine Cup.

They stayed more than two hours in their dugout after bowing to Rain or Shine, although Guiao was quick to play down the situation, saying, “Nagkakwentuhan lang.”

“We just have to go back to the drawing board. The losing streak has taken too long,” Guiao said, concerned that what once was a fluid offense has suddenly fallen “out of rhythm.”

Averaging 117 points in their first two wins, the Road Warriors are down to 93.2 points in the losses. Their defense on the other hand hasn’t improved amid the drop in their offense production as they still give up an average of 103.2 points in the defeat.

“I think we have to review the tape and find our faults. I felt that we have bad decisions defensively, but what’s also concerning is our offense. It’s out of sync, out of rhythm,” said Guiao.

“I really thought that we would be competing and playing well today because we really had a good week of practice. But sometimes, that’s not a guarantee that you’re going to play well,” he added.

Looking like contenders at the start of the season, Guiao believes that they’re now on the ropes.

However, he’s not losing hope of making the playoffs as they’re still midway through the elimination round, but the seven-time PBA champion coach said they need to stop the skid immediately.

“We have five games left. I think in order to keep ourselves alive, we must win four out of five games just to be able to make the next round,” Guiao continued.

“That’s a tall order but I think that’s still possible.”

Guiao also promised some changes – not in personnel but with how they will approach their daily training sessions just to be able to shake things up in this campaign.

“We just have to regroup. We need to talk and we need to watch a lot of films,” said Guiao. “We need to change our practice a little bit. Kailangan balasahin namin yung practice namin.”
