Guiao looking for a more consistent effort from import Wendell McKines after RoS loss to San Miguel

YENG Guiao hopes to see a more consistent effort from import Wendell McKines in the light of Rain or Shine’s 104-91 loss to San Miguel during its PBA Governors Cup debut Tuesday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The wide-bodied McKines led the Elasto Painters with 19 points and 10 rebounds, but Guiao felt the comebacking import failed to make his presence felt when the Beermen went full throttle in the second half.

“What’s really important is that our import gets into the flow offensively and defensively because that’s what’s missing,” Guiao said after the game.

The fiery Rain or Shine coach knows McKines is a beast of a player, but somehow, the 26-year-old import wasn’t able to impose his will in the final two quarters.

“Yung pagka-swak sa sistema, di pa namin nakukuha kay Wendell and nung second half, when our opponent was getting into a run, we needed our import to take the initiative. But we couldn’t get back because we’re still struggling with our chemistry with the new import,” Guiao added.

McKines also struggled from the foul line, making just three of his 10 attempts that hastened Rain or Shine’s downfall against San Miguel.

Overall, the 26-year-old hard-banging import was held to just 12 shots, making eight.

Save for two rim-rattling dunks in the second half, McKines was badly outclassed by former Rain or Shine import Arizona Reid, who dropped 28 of his 36 points to lead the Beermen’s second-half charge.

Guiao isn’t pressing the panic button though, knowing the former New Mexico standout will bounce back strong when Rain or Shine next faces Alaska, McKines’ former team on Friday.

“I have no doubt Wendell’s strong inside.  He can impose his presence. And from what I’ve seen in practice, he has an outside shot also which he has to use dahil sa team namin, our bigs need to take the outside shot. They should have that confidence and skill,” explained Guiao.

McKines, for his part, admitted lacking intensity in his Rain or Shine debut, especially in the second half.

“I gotta make my free throws. Just be more aggressive, execute,” said McKines, who is coming off a stint in the Israeli League two months ago.
