HE may have carried Rain or Shine on offense, but Jeff Chan’s series of turnovers negated his scoring in the Elasto Painters’ 87-80 loss to Alaska in Game One of their PBA Philippine Cup semifinal series on Thursday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The veteran gunner fired a team-high 17 points along with seven rebounds, but committed seven of the Elasto Painters’ 19 turnovers that greatly factored in the team squandering a huge 17-point lead.

Three of his errors came in a pivotal stretch in the payoff period that all resulted in a basket for the Aces and kept the lead for good en route to the confidence-boosting win in the best-of-seven series.

“Dami naming turnovers, lalo na ako,” Chan, who averaged just 1.6 turnovers in the elimination round, admitted after the game. “Kaya gusto ko rin mag-sorry sa teammates ko at kay coach na medyo pinilit ko yung game ko.

“Kasi nga nagkasakit ako tapos ilang games rin nawala,” added the native of Bacolod, who missed the last two games of the elims due to flu. “At sa sobrang gusto ko manalo, medyo pinilit ko yung game.”

Chan scored five of his scoring output in the second period, when the Elasto Painters built their biggest lead at 34-17, before the Aces erased it in the second half.

“Alam namin kaya nilang bawiin,” Chan admitted. “Fifteen points, seventeen points hindi safe yun pag dating sa series. Kailangan talaga naming tapusin yung game.”

“Hindi puwede yung laro namin five minutes lang,” he added. “Dapat talaga forty-eight minutes maging consistent para matalo ang Alaska kasi alam natin na hindi rin yan sila nag-gi-give up eh.”

Chan also admitted the long break after clinching an outright Final Four berth also affected Rain or Shine.

“Medyo kinalawang. Sana mawala na yung kalawang sa Saturday.”
