TNT stays mum on talks of tapping Dondon Hontiveros for playoff run in Governors Cup

TNT Katropa remained mum about talks that veteran gunner Dondon Hontiveros is likely to join the ballclub heading to the playoffs of the PBA Governors Cup.

No one among TnT management and officials have answered queries by SPIN.ph about the buzz that spread out a day after Hontiveros, 40, played his final game for Alaska.

The 'Cebuano Hotshot' was no longer renewed by the Aces after five seasons playing for the franchise.

Hontiveros and fellow veteran Tony dela Cruz suited up for Alaska one last time Wednesday in a 112-82 loss to Rain or Shine at the Ynares Center in Pasig. While dela Cruz vocally said he’s retiring for good, Hontiveros has not closed the door on possibly playing one last time for other teams.

A source close to the three-time champion and 13-time All-Star said Hontiveros has been put by Alaska in the unrestricted free agent list so that teams still interested to get his services can pick him up easily, including TnT, come the playoffs.

As per league rules, playoff-bound teams can still tap the services of other free agents and add to their respective rosters at least until the deadline for submission of the final lineup on Monday.

“Puwede pa yan until Monday afternoon,” said league operations manager Rickie Santos on Thursday.

“Kung mag-aactivate lang ng free agent, until Monday noon lang.”

Hontiveros said he still ‘feels good physically’ and always ‘stays in shape,’ although statistically, he struggled in his final game in an Alaska uniform after going just 1-of-8 from the field to finish with two points in 21 minutes of play against the Elasto Painters.
