Moala Tautuaa proves worth as Talk 'N Text pounces on off-form Rain or Shine
Moala Tautuaa played his best game in the PBA for Talk 'N Text.

TALK 'N Text rode a sizzling start to score a wire-to-wire win over Rain or Shine, 95-85, in their marquee showdown Sunday in the Smart Bro-PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The Tropang Texters scored 17 unanswered points to start the game in a huge blow from which the Elasto Painters never recovered.

Coach Jong Uichico himself admitted being surprised with the way his team came out from the get-go, which saw the Tropang Texters shoot 51 percent in the first half compared to the 24 percent of the Elasto Painters en route to a 34-9 lead midway through the second quarter.

“Hindi ko naman alam na ganun ang isho-shoot nila. Nagkaroon ng kumpiyansa, and that set the tone for the game,” said Uichico, who got a combined 46 points from rookies Moala Tautuaa and Troy Rosario.

Talk N’ Text’s fifth win in eight outings tied the team with Globalport for fourth spot, while denying Rain or Shine a chance of regaining a piece of the lead as it fell to 6-2.

Tautuaa finally had his breakout game as a rookie with 27 points and eight rebounds, while fellow freshman Troy Rosario added 19 as the duo finished as the only players in double figures for the Tropang Texters.

It was the worst game Rain or Shine had this conference as the Elasto Painters finished the game shooting just 38 percent (30-of-80) and 68 percent from the foul line (21-of-31). They also shot 4-of-26 from three-point range (15 percent) as the team missed its first 22 attempts from three-point range before making its last four.

“It’s a matter of us making their shots, and they’re missing theirs,” said Uichico. “Of course, you have to give some credit to the defense din naman.”

Still, Uichico lamented how the Tropang Texters let their guards down in the final few minutes of the game that allowed the Elasto Painters to cut the deficit to its lowest at the final buzzer.

“Nag-relax sila in the end, If the lead was not that big, Rain or Shine can comeback anytime,” noted the TNT mentor.

“We played good three quarters and a half.”
