TERRENCE Romeo played down his big game in a marquee match-up with Jayson Williams in Globalport’s 108-101 conquest of Tropang TNT Friday night in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

Romeo outscored Castro in their shootout, 33-25, as he led Batang Pier to their second win in three outings.

Although Castro outgunned Romeo in the fourth quarter, 12-9, when the Texters made a great effort to cut down a once-imposing 81-60 edge to just 100-95, the GlobalPort star fired a timely three-pointer to hike the lead back to 103-95, from which Tropang TNT never recovered.

But despite the victory, Romeo had nothing but praises for his Gilas senior teammate, who was twice adjudged as the best point guard in Asia.

“Hindi ko naman inisip na makipa-compete sa kanya (Jayson Castro). Alam naman natin na marami na siyang napatunayan,” said Romeo of the Tropang TNT superstar.

“Ako nag-uumpisa pa lang sa PBA, kaya marami pa akong matututunan sa kanya,” he added.

Following his 33-point outburst, Romeo has now surpassed Carlo Lastimosa as the league’s top local scorer with an average of 31.7 points.

Last year’s Most Improved Player, however, said there’s still a lot of room for improvement as far as the Batang Pier are concerned.

He lamented how the team suddenly lost grip of that 21-point advantage and needed to scramble in the endgame before prevailing over a hard-fighting but import-less Tropang Texters side.

“Katulad kanina lamang kami, tapos bigla kaming nahabol. Dapat ganung mga time mas composed na kami,” he admitted. “Dapat mas nakakapag-usap na kami, at alam na namin kung saan ibabagsak ang bola.

“Yung mga ganung lapses, kailangan ma-review at mapag-aralan namin.”
