TALK ‘N Text made it gloomier for Rain or Shine on All Souls’ Day as the Tropang Texters dealt the Elasto Painters a 99-76 beating on Sunday in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Regaining the energy that was lacking in their loss to Alaska last time, the Texters broke the game wide open in the second half behind rookie Kevin Alas - the same player the Elasto Painters made the No. 2 pick overall in the last draft before trading him away in the offseason.

Alas put up his best game so far in his young career, tallying 18 points, six boards, and four assists to lead the Texters, who hardly encountered resistance from the Painters and pulled away in the payoff period.

The two teams are now tied at 2-2 (win-loss).

“He had a breakout game,” Texters coach Jong Uichico said of Alas. “Consistency na lang ang kailangan niya.”

The Painters’ defense looked so light like the traffic in Manila this weekend as Alas shot 7-of-12 from the field and scored nine of his output in the third quarter, where the Texters outscored the Painters, 27-15, and established their biggest lead at 25.

The game had a foregone conclusion from thereon as the Painters failed to come closer than 16 points in the final frame.

Worse, Painters star Paul Lee suffered an injury to his right leg after a collision with the Texters’ Ryan Reyes.

Ranidel de Ocampo also shone with 20 points, four boards, and two assists in just 18 minutes, while Jay Washington chipped in 18 markers, six rebounds, three assists, and two blocks.

Jeff Chan led the Painters with 16 points — all but two in the second period, which proved insufficient as his team still trailed by 11 at halftime.
