SOL Mercado insisted Denise Laurel’s announcement of their breakup barely a day after Ginebra’s Govenors’ Cup conquest was hardly a dampener.

“No, it (the championship) was a great feeling,” the Gin Kings playmaker said in between obliging to fans’ photo requests during their thanksgiving party on Sunday. “It was sweet feeling, not bittersweet at all.”

Mercado and Laurel had been together since 2012 and had been engaged a year later. But the marriage was postponed a couple of times before news of their breakup was revealed by Laurel in a couple of tweets on Thursday.

“It wasn’t news to me,” Mercado insisted. “We’ve been friends.”

Still, Mercado acknowledged Laurel’s gesture to avoid taking the spotlight by delaying the announcement of the unfortunate development.

“I guess she wanted to let everybody know,” Mercado said. “Maybe she didn’t want any of the attention to be on her (during the finals). She wanted all the attention to be on me, because lot of people were messaging and tagging her.”

“It (breakup) happens,” he added. “We’re still friends though.”

Mercado then shifted focus to the fans for their undying support.

“It’s amazing,” Mercado said. “It’s good to be able to show them some love. They’ve been showing us love the whole conference to get us through.”
