SAN Miguel Beer coach Leo Austria expressed concern over the Beermen’s lack of preparation for the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

Coming off a Philippine Cup Finals series against Alaska that went the distance and ended just last week, the Beermen were left with little time for their buildup for the import-spiced conference.

“Medyo worried ako ng konti dahil napaka-ikli ng time namin to prepare for the second conference,” Austria admitted after the Beermen’s victory party at the SMC compound in Ortigas.

The Beermen were incomplete when they returned to practice on Wednesday, exactly a week after their title conquest. They have until next Tuesday to prepare for the start of their back-to-back title bid, against Kia.

SMB import Ronald Roberts will have even less time to train with the powerhouse squad as he won't arrive in the Philippines until Sunday.

“I hope hindi sila mag-relax at sana gutom pa rin,” Austria said.

“Pero due to the motivation of the management, I think ready naman sila,” he was quick to add. “At na-realize na nila kung gaano ka-importante ang nag-cha-champion.”

Austria admits feeling the extra weight on his shoulders as expectations mount — with a grand slam now part of fan discussions.

“Lagi naman may pressure ever since nag-coach ako. Lagi nag-e-expect ang management na mananalo kayo. But kailangan may preparasyon talaga eh.”

“Yung ang mga iniisip ng tao (grand slam), pero ang treatment namin ay every game ay very important, kaya one game at a time kami,” he added. “Hindi mo pwede isipin yung (future), dahil may second and third conference pa.”
