THE search and screening committee tasked by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) to come up with a short list of coaching candidates for Gilas Pilipinas will convene for the first time on Tuesday to set the parameters and criteria under which it will undertake its mandate.

A timeline will also be set to govern the selection process of the committee chaired by SBP vice-chairman Ricky Vargas, with PBA commissioner Chito Salud, PBA chairman Pato Gregorio, PBA vice chairman Robert Non (representing PBA D-League) and SBP executive director Sonny Barrios.

A series of deliberations will follow as necessary whereupon the recommended names will be submitted to SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan, head of the basketball body's executive committee, for final decision.

Barrios said Tuesday's meeting will be more of organizational in nature, with the committee likely to set the parameters for the process, the criteria for the selection, and a timeline.

Asked if names of probable candidates will be tossed around and discussed during the meeting, Barrios said he has no idea as he declined to comment on cage legend Robert Jaworski's statements on Wednesday night saying he's open to the possibility of taking on the Gilas coaching job.

"We're sure that Senator Jaworski is always there to serve the country in whatever capacity, as he has done throughout his career," said Barrios. "But to quote Mr. Jaworski himself, 'wag nating pangunahan ang committee.

"I'd rather not comment on individuals at this point, being a member of the committee."

A parallel selection panel for national teams without PBA players will meet on November 15. Barrios, as SBP representative, will chair the group, which includes SBP Board of Trustees members Junel Baculi, representing UAAP, Fr. Victor Calvo, O.P. (NCAA), Raul Alcoseba (Cesafi and the Visayas-Mindanao regions) and Dr. Ernesto Jay Adalem (NAASCU and NCR).

Among the events set next year are the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore in June and the 28th FIBA Asia Championship in China in August which will serve as the regional qualifier to the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016.
