SAN Miguel Beer sustained its resurgence and extended the misery of Star with a 100-89 victory on Sunday in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The Beermen led from start to finish and maintained a sizeable cushion as they encountered a disjointed Hotshots side in a heated battle between sister teams.

“From the start, we knew it was going to be a tough game because both teams needed to win,” Beermen coach Leo Austria said. “I give credit to my players because they’re focused.”

SMB thus stretched its winning streak to three games to move above the .500 mark with a 3-2 win-loss card, while sending the Hotshots reeling to a third straight defeat against after the defending champions started the conference win a win over NLEX.

June Mar Fajardo imposed his presence in the paint with 21 points, 20 boards, and two blocks, while import AZ Reid kept his solid form by tallying 29 points, 11 boards, and four assists for the Beermen.

Farado's rebounding output led the Beermen's 57 caroms that was far more than the 39 of the Hotshots, who shot just 7-of-25 from long distance.

One incident that marred SMB’s win was star forward Arwind Santos getting ejected after picking up a second technical foul for taunting Star import Marqus Blakely early in the fourth quarter.

Blakely was one of the few bright spots for the Hotshots as the do-it-all import scattered 29 points, 15 boards, four assists, two steals, and two blocks in 45 minutes.

James Yap, benched in the endgame against Meralco last Sunday, saw action at crunch time this weekend, hitting a left-wing three-pointer that nudged the Hotshots within five, 92-87, with a little over two minutes left.

But that was the closest Star got as its difficulties mounted.
