SAN Miguel secured an outright spot in the semifinals with a 91-62 victory over winless Blackwater on Tuesday in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome.

The Beermen earned the top seeding at the end of the single-round eliminations with a 9-2 win-loss card. They ended up in a tie with Rain or Shine but won the tiebreaker due to the winner-over-the-other.

San Miguel coach Leo Austria said he is pleasantly surprised to see the Beermen end up at No. 1 in his first conference as head coach.

“I didn’t know that we will become number one after the eliminations because it’s a new system. I’m happy to see them that they are trying to embrace my new season,” said Austria.

The Elite ended their maiden campaign in the PBA with a 0-11 record.

Sol Mercado and Marcio Lassiter scored 16 of San Miguel’s 31 points in the second period, where the Beermen pulled away for good, 50-31, at halftime. The Beermen led by as many as 31 points at one point.

Mercado finished with seven of his 15 points in the second period while Lassiter had all his nine points in the same quarter.

Eddie Laure had 10 for Blackwater, which led 3-0 at the start but never tasted the lead again.
