MANAGEMENT of San Miguel Beer said it will deal with longtime utility Edwin Cortez accordingly following his alleged involvement in an on-court skirmish during Game Two of the PBA Philippine cup Finals between the Beermen and the Alaska Aces.

No less than team manager Gee Abanilla made the assurance when asked him about the matter.

One of the team’s longtime staff, Cortez was seen on television replay hitting mercurial forward Calvin Abueva in the stomach area during a dead ball situation in the first half of the highly-physical match which the Beermen won, 100-86 on Friday night.

The 6-1 Abueva, who had been engaging San Miguel veteran Arwind Santos in a shoving match and trash talking prior to the incident, was standing in front of the San Miguel bench when Cortez was seen in replays striking the Alaska forward. tried to get the side of Cortez, but Abanilla said company policy bars its utility staff from issuing any statements to the media.

“Sorry, pero company policy lang na they (utility staff members) are not allowed to issue statements to the press. I hope you understand,” Abanilla said on Saturday just before the team’s practice at the Acropolis gym in Libis, Quezon City.

But Abanilla, who served as San Miguel coach during the 2013 season, explained the franchise “will handle its affairs for sure.”

Cortez was among the eight personalities summoned by commissioner Chito Salud at his office on Sunday hours before Game Three is played, to explain their sides in separate incidents that marred Friday night’s game at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Also invited by Salud are Abueva, Santos, Vic Manuel, David Semerad, Dondon Hontiveros, Ronald Tubid, and Alaska deputy coach Louie Alas.
