Expiring contracts of star players not a distraction for Rain or Shine, says Guiao

IS Rain or Shine lacking motivation with its core’s future still hanging in the balance?

One can’t help but ask the question as the Elasto Painters have had a fluctuating campaign so far early in the PBA Governors’ Cup after winning it all in the Commissioner’s Cup.

After capturing their second league title last May in the midseason tournament, the E-Painters have started the season-ending conference with a loss, won their next two games, before losing to Meralco, 109-102, last Wednesday for an even 2-2 record.

It has been nearly three months since the E-Painters ruled the Commissioner’s Cup, but 10 players with expiring contracts as well as coach Yeng Guiao, have yet to be renewed.

“Hindi pa,” the RoS coach, whose current three-year contract expires on September 30, confirmed to Spin.ph after their loss to the Bolts. “We’re waiting for management’s notice. Nandyan lang kami.”

Commissioner’s Cup Finals MVP Paul Lee, Gabe Norwood, and Extra Rice Inc. tandem JR Quiñahan and Beau Belga are among the players with expiring contracts that have yet to be renewed.

ROS co-owner Raymond Yu earlier assured during a dinner with media just days after their Commissioner’s Cup conquest that they will re-sign Guiao and most, if not all, their players with contracts about to end.

But it has been a while since the assurance and it’s understandable to expect a prompt reward after winning a championship for the franchise.

Guiao, though, insisted it has hardly affected their performance early in the Governors’ Cup.

“I don’t think relevant siya or may effect siya ngayon, kasi secure naman kami sa paniniwala namin na most of us are going to stay,” the champion coach said with a smile.

Guiao also said the players with expiring contracts this year have been extended for a month to October 30 as mandated by the Commissioner's Office since the season was extended after the league gave way to the hosting of the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
