Rookie Brondial beating himself up for missed basket late in Ginebra loss to Blackwater
Ginebra rookie Rodney Brondial is understandably feeling low after missing a big basket late in a loss to Blackwater on Saturday in Dipolog City. Snow Badua

BARANGAY Ginebra rookie forward Rodney Brondial took the blame for the Gin Kings’ 83-78 loss to lowly Blackwater during their PBA Governors Cup road game in Dipolog City on Saturday.

With Blackwater ahead, 78-77, in the endgame, Ginebra had a chance to regain the lead when veteran big man Dorian Pena trooped to the foul line after being fouled inside the lane.

The Fil-American big man missed both free throws but Brondial managed to go around Blackwater forward Reil Cervantes, collar the rebound, and find a free path to the basket.

For some reason, Brondial missed the easy putback - badly.

He later explained in a somber tone: “I was about to jump that time, tapos for some reason, hindi ko alam bakit hindi ako nakatalon and pasubsob ako.

“Ang feeling ko, parang kumapit yung shoes ko or napatid or may tumulak sa akin. Hindi ko talaga alam. Pero kung hindi ko tinira 'yun, tatawagan ako ng travelling kasi pasubsob na ako. Na-out of balance na ako.”

Blackwater import Marcus Douthit went on to haul down the rebounds where he was fouled in Ginebra’s apparent attempt to stop the clock, with 24 seconds left in the game.

Blackwater made its last five free throws to end a three-game losing streak and deal Ginebra its third loss in four games in the season-ending conference.

Despite the pain of letting his team down, the former Adamson Falcon said he intends to use that failure as motivation as he continues to man the slot, along with Pena and new boy Dave Marcelo, in the absence of Greg Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar.

“Ayaw ko gawing excuse 'yun (missed putback). I’ll be better dahil sa mga pagyayaring ganito,” vowed Brondial, who is averaging 19 minutes of play this conference.

Ginebra flew back to Manila on Sunday and will return to practice on Monday prior to their departure the next day for Dubai, where the Kings will play an official game against Rain or Shine on Friday.
