REYNEL Hugnatan turned to a weapon that’s not part of his arsenal, but keyed Meralco’s106-99 win over San Miguel Beer on Saturday that extended their PBA Governors’ Cup quarterfinal matchup to a deciding game.

The veteran forward, not known for his three-point shooting, took and made a right-corner triple off a broken play that shattered the game’s final deadlock and put the Bolts on top for good at 102-99 with two minutes and 45 seconds left.

“Wala na kasing oras eh kaya nung pinasa ni Mike (Cortez) sa akin, sabi ko itira ko na lang ‘to kasi wala na eh,” Hugnatan said in a short chat with after the game. “Buti pumasok.”

The 36-year-old Bacolod native, who has taken one three-point shot the entire conference, said the Bolts have a drill in practice where they hone their three-point shooting.

But Hugnatan was still surprised his rare shot went in.

“Medyo (nagulat), syempre,” admitted the 12-year veteran, who finished with nine points and three boards in 17 minutes. “Tawagin nating lucky shot ‘yun.”

SMB star Arwind Santos could not agree more.

“Swerte lang talaga,” Santos, who witnessed the stunner on the bench, said before issuing a warning.

“Pero minsan, sabi nga nila, ang swerte nauubus rin yan.”
