Rain or Shine braces for intense match against winless, dangerous San Miguel

A MORE motivated Rain or Shine looks to open the PBA Governors Cup with a big victory when it faces struggling San Miguel Beer on Tuesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Disgusted after the loss in the Commissioner’s Cup finals to Talk N Text, Yeng Guiao says the hunger to win remains and they enter the season-ending tournament eager to get another shot at the title.

“The hunger is still there. We will not rest and we will not settle until we win a championship, because once you win a championship, it becomes addicting,” said Guiao, whose team has gone 0-4 in finals series.

Rain or Shine faces San Miguel (0-2) at 7 p.m.

Former Alaska import Wendell McKines will be reinforcing the Elasto Painters this conference and will be pitting skills against former Rain or Shine import Arizona Reid.

McKines averaged 29.7 points, 15.0 rebounds, and 3.1 assists during his 2013 Governors Cup stint with the Aces.

Guiao explained that McKines plays big, despite standing just 6 feet 4 inches, can keep pace with Rain or Shine’s up-tempo style and shoot the three.

“I think he’s (McKines) not as tall as Wayne (Chism) but he’s probably as strong or maybe stronger than Wayne which compensates for his lack of height, plus meron din siyang range,” said Guiao.

Rain or Shine will be going up against a San Miguel side that opened the third conference with shocking losses to KIA (83-78) and Meralco (106-95 overtime).

San Miguel Beer coach Leo Austria has been barred by board governor Robert Non from talking to media following the team’s second straight setback.

Forward Arwind Santos has said the Beermen’s lack of commitment to play defense is a huge factor in the dismal start.

Reid also has yet to recover from a bum stomach that affected him last week, averaging just 15.0 points on 32.3 percent shooting from the floor.

“Kung makakapili ako (ng makakalaban), sana huwag muna sila (Beermen). I’m sure they will play with much sense of urgency, dahil alam nila, kapag 0-3 sila, nagde-delikado ka na dahil marami pa silang makakalabang malakas,” noted Guiao.

“That urgency will be there. They know by falling 0-3, that’s a deep hole to come out from.”
