ONE would know how the game went in the end when coach Yeng Guiao could afford to take a sip from his takeout cup of mint tea while complaining to the referees.

Rain or Shine, already bound for the playoffs, continued to gain some steam heading into the next round of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup as it cruised past Blackwater, 118-107, on Sunday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The Elasto Painters pounced on Elite’s late errors to pull away and register their third straight win to finish the elimination round with a 7-4 win-loss record, good for solo third spot.

“Wala kasi akong boses,” Guiao explained of his drink. “It was still a struggle for us.”

JR Quinahan and Jeff Chan stepped up with new import Pierre Henderson-Niles looking gassed out in his debut for the E-Painters, who dealt the Elite their fifth straight loss.

Blackwater finished with a 3-8 card.

Quiñahan showed the way with 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 11 in the payoff period, on top of six rebounds and three steals in 19 minutes off the bench, while Chan added 12 points, including five straight that capped off a 12-2 run that allowed them to break away.

Henderson-Niles, huffing and puffing throughout the game and suffering from cramps down the stretch, wound up with 12 points and six boards in 25 minutes.

Carlo Lastimosa, fresh from a three-year contract extension, scattered 27 points, nine assists, and four boards in 34 minutes as he led the Elite’s late stand that proved insufficient.
