RAIN or Shine delivered in the nick of time to frustrate Mahindra, 103-98, and sustain its surge in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Wednesday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The Elasto Painters overcame the absence of ejected coach Yeng Guiao in the second half as they turned the game around late in the payoff period to register their third straight win and move above .500 with a 4-3 win-loss record.

Jeff Chan bucked a black eye as he conspired with Jericho Cruz in hitting the biggest baskets down the stretch for the E-Painters, who saw a tough challenge from the Enforcers before their opponents suffered their fourth loss in seven games.

“It’s not really a pretty game for us,” said Guiao, who was thrown out after picking up two straight technical fouls late in the second quarter, underlining his frustration over the officiating. “But it’s still a win and it gives us momentum, so we’ll take it.”

The Enforcers still led, 95-93, before Chan drained a right-wing three-pointer and Cruz converted a putback that put them up for good as the ROS guards ended up scoring all but one of their team’s last 10 points.

Chan and Cruz finished with 18 points apiece.

JR Quiñahan also stepped up with a team-leading 19 points in 22 minutes off the bench as import Mo Charlo submitted a sub-par, yet all-around game of 16 points on 3-of-12 shooting, along with eight boards, and eight assists.

Augustus Gilchrist anchored the Enforcers with 28 points and 11 boards, while LA Revilla added 20 markers and eight assists, but committed two crucial miscues that factored in their downfall and wasted their upset bid.
