WHAT are the qualities that would make a good PBA commissioner?

Officer-in-charge Willie Marcial believes the next league chieftain should either be a lawyer or a good marketing man, hinting the board should start looking for a leader possessing such attributes.

“Sa akin, abugado, malaking bagay yun. O kaya marketing (guy),” he pointed out.

Marcial appeared as the special guest in the first session of the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum for the year at the Tapa King restaurant at Farmers’ Market in Cubao, where he was joined by PBA and D-League technical director Eric Castro, manager for operations Roscelle Teotico, D-League tournament supervisor Junior Bengua, and Tapa King vice chairman Julius Magallanes.

The current league caretaker said whoever will be the next commissioner can’t go wrong especially with a staff like Castro, Teotico, Bengua, and the rest of the current personnel of the PBA.

Marcial took over as OIC after the resignation of former commissioner Chito Narvasa became effective starting in the new year, although he reiterated the stint would only be good for just a month.

Yet this early, there is a growing clamor for him to be appointed permanently as commissioner after several effective innovations he implemented in so short a time as OIC.

The longtime external affairs and communications head though, remained non-committal.

“No comment ako.

A selection committee in-charge of choosing the next commissioner will be formed when the league board holds its first monthly meeting for 2018 next week.
