MANNY Pacquiao is expected to take a more active role as playing coach when Kia Motors resumes its preparation for the PBA Commissioner's Cup.

But before that, the Sorento players are expected to fly to General Santos City and join their coach’s birthday celebration on Wednesday.

The work starts after that, according to Kia team manager Eric Pineda, who told that Kia players will be staying for a few more days in the South to undergo stamina training with Pacquiao, who is turning 36.

The boxing champion, who on Saturday moved closer to a highly anticipated fight against Floyd Mayweather, Jr., is keen on calling the plays and manage the players’ minutes, according to Pineda.

Pacquiao is also looking to beef up the squad and said recently they are already scouting for a reinforcement.

“Coach Manny will be more active in calling the shots for the team, like handling the player rotation and assume his position,” Pineda told shortly after the team's gathering with the boxing icon at the Midas Hotel on Saturday.

Pacquiao missed the Sorento's last game in the Philippine Cup due to a tropical depression, but management says he will have a more active role in the second conference starting on January 28.

"He wants to condition the team after ng birthday niya kaya sila (Kia players) mag-stay pa after ng birthday nya, para pag-start ng practice ng team sa first week of January, ready na sila," Pineda said.
