Olsen Racela says birthday celebration on All Saints Day could've been special had Ginebra won

OLSEN Racela celebrated his birthday Sunday the way he did for the past 44 years – inside the cemetery.

But this one could have been extra special had Barangay Ginebra not lost to Barako Bull in their Smartbro-PBA Philippine Cup match up on the eve of his special day.

“Oo nga sana,” said the Kings deputy mentor when asked if a win could have been a perfect birthday gift for the man named after ‘All Saints Day.’

Olsen added it could have been a nice birthday celebration and family reunion as well at the cemetery had the Kings not squandered a 21-point first quarter lead and ended up on the losing end, 82-79.

But Racela said the Kings have no one to blame but themselves.

“We have to do a better job of sustaining it,” said Racela, who graciously tried to analyze what happened to the Kings after coach Tim Cone hurriedly left the Mall of Asia Arena following the team’s second straight loss in the tournament.

“Medyo naging tentative kami ( in the second half), which was so different from our first quarter,” he said.

The former San Miguel star also noted that only Greg Slaughter played well for the Kings against the Energy as the big man registered his first 20-20 career with 27 points and 26 rebounds.

“We also need to get contributions from the other guys. After Greg, si LA (Tenorio) na yata ang sumunod na maganda ang laro sa amin,” he said as he took a glance at the game statistics.

But not to take away the victory from the Energy, said Racela.

“Maganda yung game plan nila and their adjustment. They made us uncomfortable on the offensive end and it showed in the second half,” said the Ginebra assistant coach.

After a one-day break, Ginebra resumes practice on Monday and will leave for Dubai on Wednesday for its showdown against Alaska.

Hopefully, there will be enough reason for Racela to celebrate out of the country.
