NLEX mulling quick import change with Adrian Forbes' non-existent outside game

ANTIPOLO – NLEX coach Yeng Guiao is pondering on making a quick import change, with Adrian Forbes’s lack of outside shooting an issue for the Road Warriors.

Forbes made a solid debut with 26 points, 17 boards, five blocks, and one block in almost 41 minutes, but the Road Warriors import was hardly an outside threat and made just six of his 10 charities in their 123-103 loss to Columbian Dyip.

“I think he’s a great inside player, but when he steps out, I don’t think that he has the confidence to take perimeter shots,” NLEX coach Yeng Guiao said. “And yung free throws niya … I feel that an import has to shoot around 75 to 80 percent to prevent the other team from just fouling him, especially yung inside game lang niya yung pine-prevent.”

“So rather than give him a dunk, other teams are just going to willingly foul him to send him to the free-throw line, so that is one thing we have to anticipate going forward if we are going to keep him,” he added. “That’s going to a matter a lot is close games.”

“Alam niyo naman na may bias ako for big men who can step up and take the jumpshot, whether it’s a medium-range jumpshot or three-point shot, and even Asi (Taulava) has that skill now,” Guiao continued with a smile. “So it’s really something that it’s a part of a big-man skillset in order to fit in our system for them to be able to have an inside game and an outside game.”

Guiao said they will make a decision “in a day or two” whether to replace Forbes with their original choice, Arnett Moultrie, who’s finally available after being held up by his team in Bahrain.

“He is still a prime option since he’s indicated that he’s available,” Guiao said of Moultrie. “Tingnan muna natin. I will have to consult my assistant coaches and we have to make a decision right away, kasi baka available siya, bigla na namang pagka ginusto namin, hindi naman siya available ulit, so we will have to make that decision right away.”

The Road Warriors return to action on Wednesday against Rain or Shine before facing Meralco on Friday.

“For now, since wala pa namang ano, I think we have to assume that we will stay (with Forbes),” Guiao said. “Kung may chance na…if we decide and if there’s a chance that we can fly in Moultrie right away, then maybe baka Friday na ang soonest, but we’ll see what happens.”
