Meralco looking to end elims campaign on a high note with emphatic win over lowly Blackwater

MERALCO tries to end its elimination round campaign in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on a winning note when it battles woeful Blackwater in Wednesday’s final playdate at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Game time is at 4:15 p.m.

The Bolts dropped out of the race for a top two finish following their 96-85 loss to defending champion Purefoods.

But Meralco (6-4) nonetheless, has already secured a top five finish going to the playoffs and will face sister team NLEX in a best-of-three quarterfinal series regardless of the outcome of its game against Blackwater.

Meralco gunner Gary David said though the game may have no bearing at all, the Bolts still intend to end the eliminations with a win and hopefully, carry the momentum entering the playoffs.

“Kailangan naming talunin yung Blackwater para pagdating sa playoffs, mataas yung morale namin,” said David, who scored 27 points in the Bolts’ 11-point loss to the Hotshots.

Blackwater coach Leo Isaac said the Elite’s campaign this conference could hopefully toughen them up as they begin preparing for the season-ending Governors Cup.

“Despite being at the bottom again, at least, we got two wins. So now, we’re aiming for a third win against Meralco,” said Isaac, whose team’s twin victories (2-8) came at the expense of Philippine Cup champion San Miguel Beer and KIA.

“We’re still in the process of learning the ropes in playing in the PBA, so sana, matutunan na namin yung gusto naming matutunan and be ready for the third conference.”

The game also marks the Blackwater debut of Reil Cervantes since being acquired by the team last Monday from KIA in exchange for Alex Nuyles.

The 6-foot-4 Cervantes is averaging 8.3 points and 3.3 rebounds for KIA prior to the trade.
