Barroca, Jalalon agree Magnolia must shed habit of slow starts vs SMB: 'Unahan na namin'

BEING known as the comeback kids of the PBA Finals might have a nice ring to it, but Magnolia knows that they cannot live with that heading into the next few games of the PBA Philippine Cup finals against a powerhouse team like San Miguel.

This was their key takeaway as the Beermen held on to a 92-77 victory in Game Two on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena that evened the championship series at 1-1.

The Hotshots found themselves trailing by 20 points anew and just like in Game One, they made the Beermen sweat by trimming the lead to just seven points after an 11-0 run to start the fourth period.

The defending champs, however, responded with a 10-0 run of their own to take the fight out of the Hotshots for good.

“Kailangan talaga first, second, third, unahan na namin. Kasi sayang. Sayang yung game na yung palitan ng score, tapos lalamang sila ng bente, hahabulin namin,” said Jio Jalalon.

“Hindi naman kami superhero siguro para magawa namin ulit yun. Swerte lang kami nung Game One. Nagawa lang namin yung trabaho namin. Ngayon inaalagaan na talaga nila yung score nila,” he added.

Veteran guard Mark Barroca echoed his teammate’s sentiments.

Knowing how talented the Beermen are, the former FEU standout said that going down big against them is something that they cannot afford in the next few games.

“Dapat next game, hindi na ganito. Kasi pag ganito lagi, ang hirap, lagi kaming naghahabol sa huli,” Barroca said as he led the Hotshots with 18 points and five rebounds.

The 5-foot-10 Barroca believes that the week’s rest is something that will benefit them more as they get more time to recharge and plan their scheme against San Miguel heading into Game Three.

“Meron pa kaming ilang days para mag-prepare ng maayos, makapag-rest muna,” Barroca said.

“Siguro kasi sila nakapagpahinga na sila. Kami, di pa kami nakapagpahinga simula nung mag-semifinals, so tignan natin sa next game namin na nakapagrest na kami,” he added.
