MARCIO Lassiter came to the rescue as San Miguel Beer survived Star, 111-110, to turn their PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinal series around on Wednesday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The SMB sniper knocked down the game-winning triple that kissed the glass off a second-chance play that negated another superb showing of Ricardo Ratliffe as the Beermen registered a second straight win to take a 2-1 lead in their best-of-five series.

“Talagang swerte kami, pero ang swerte pumupunta kapag magagaling ang player, especially si Marcio,” SMB coach Leo Austria said.

“But it’s a team effort eh, lahat naman nag-contribute eh. Kahit yung mga hindi nagagamit, may role silang ginagampanan,” he added. “It’s just a one-point win, but it doesn’t matter.”

The Beermen can finish off the Hotshots with a win in Game Four on Friday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Ratliffe exploded for 44 points, including 13 points in the last four minutes and seven seconds, the last on a turnaround hook shot over Charles Rhodes that gave the Hotshots a 110-108 lead with 13 seconds left after they trailed by eight points, 94-102, with 4:23 remaining.

Ratliffe, who completed an outstanding showing with 19 rebounds, and seven assists, four blocks, and one steal with less than a minute of rest, had the chance to seal the win, but tipped Chris Ross’ miss in the next play to the wrong person as Lassiter caught the pass, crossed over Justin Melton before rising for the three-pointer from the left wing that pierced through the Hotshots’ hearts.

Ross put on another all-around performance with 27 points, eight boards, eight assists, three steals, and one block in 42 minutes as the SMB star playmaker kept his team afloat, while Rhodes led the team with 36 points, seven caroms, four assists, three steals, and three blocks in 46 minutes.

Lassiter, scoreless in the first quarter, finished with 12 points on 2-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc, four rebounds, three assists, and one steal in 37 minutes.

Paul Lee led the Hotshots locals with 21 points, five assists, three boards, and one steal, against six turnovers in 31 minutes.

The scores:

SMB 111 – Rhodes 36, Ross 27, Fajardo 18, Lassiter 12, Cabagnot 9, Santos 6, Tubid 3, Heruela 0

STAR 110 – Ratliffe 44, Lee 21, Sangalang 11, Jalalon 10, Barroca 9, Maliksi 7, Simon 3, Ramos 3, Reavis 2, Melton 0
