San Miguel looking to recapture old form with new import Charles Rhodes in the fold

LIKE how Arwind Santos believes his new hairdo fits him, San Miguel Beer seeks to keep proving the same with its new import when it takes on Phoenix in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Friday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.

From a simple buzz cut, Santos sported some sort of crew cut in the Beermen’s conference debut last Sunday when they grounded Meralco, 99-92, behind reinforcement Charles Rhodes, who seems a perfect fit for the Philippine Cup champions.

“Inspirasyon? Wala naman. Buhok lang yan eh,” Santos said when asked why he decided to change his look. “May kanya-kanya tayong buhok. Kahit anong gawin mo sa buhok mo, karapatan mo yan – as long as nababagay sa’yo at nadadala mo.”

“’Di bale magbago ang look mo, wag lang ugali mo, vision mo sa buhay, yung pagkatao mo,” he added.

The Beermen’s stayed true to their identity as they picked up from where they left off in the all-Filipino conference and handed the Bolts their first loss in the import-laced tournament.

What’s scarier is SMB has yet to regain its top form – and the Beermen look to continue the process in their match against the Fuel Masters at 7 p.m.

“It's a matter of how to get into top shape,” SMB coach Leo Austria said. “If we will be back in our top shape, I think it's very tough for them to beat us.”

“But you know, anything can happen because of the presence of imports,” he was quick to add.

The Fuel Masters are fielding an equally competitive reinforcement in Jameel Mckay, who along with Matthew Wright, led the team to a three-point win over Ginebra last Saturday in Davao and are looking to do the same against the Beermen.

The Fuel Masters, sporting an even 2-2 win-loss card, are likewise seeking to put up an encore after being the only team to beat the Beermen in the elimination round last conference.

TNT KaTropa seeks a third straight win in four games when it takes on winless sister squad NLEX in the opening game at 4:15 p.m.
