SAN Miguel Beer coach Leo Austria clarified that AZ Reid remains part of the team, but confirmed management is looking for a replacement import in his absence due to injury.

Reacting to a SPIN.ph story that SMB had decided to sack Reid, who earlier said he could miss games owing to a Achilles heel injury on his right foot, Austria said Reid will only be relegated to the injury list even if they find a replacement.

“We don’t have any plan to change him, but nag-alala lang kami the past days kasi hindi namin alam kung kailan siya makakabalik, so this is my responsibility to get another import,” Austria told SPIN.ph on Wednesday morning.

SPIN.ph sources, however, insisted management had made the decision to sack Reid before Austria gave him a reprieve.

“He’s still part of the team,” he insisted. “If you ask anybody from the team, siya pa rin ang gusto namin. Kaya lang, kung ganun ang sitwasyon na hindi namin alam kung kalian siya makakabalik, kailangan maghanap kami ng backup.”

The Beermen, however, failed to find a replacement in time for their rematch against Alaska on Wednesday night.

“It’s too late for today’s game,” Austria said, confirming they will play with an all-Filipino lineup against the Aces if Reid can’t suit up.

Austria said Reid, who had treatment on Wednesday morning, will only be relegated to the injured list once they find a replacement import.
