LA Tenorio glad to see rookie guard Scottie Thompson stepping up for Ginebra
Scottie Thompson has done good enough to make the starting lineup for the Governors Cup, says LA Tenorio. Dante Peralta

HIS absence allowed the ascent of his apprentice. And there’s no stopping it even in his return.

LA Tenorio is glad Scottie Thompson has been rising to the occasion for Barangay Ginebra when the former was out with Gilas Pilipinas with Japeth Aguilar and injured Greg Slaughter.

Tenorio is back, but won’t get in the way of Thompson.

“Si Scottie, natuwa nga ako na si Scottie, he took advantage yung pagkawala namin ni Greg,” Tenorio said in his first appearance with the Gin Kings after returning from a three-week European training camp with the national team.

“And I think it’s about time na mag-take charge na siya as early as now,” he added, solidifying coach Tim Cone’s earlier desire for Thompson to be ‘The Man’ at Ginebra. “Para ma-feel niya agad.”

Tenorio was pleased to see Thompson score 12 points, including 10 in the opening period, of the Gin Kings’ 127-114 win over Tropang TNT in their tune-up game on Wednesday at CCF gym.

But Tenorio knows the rookie playmaker, who won’t turn 23 until next month, still has some reluctance of having a conscious effort to take over.

“May tendency rin si Scottie na mahiya, so sana lang dere-deretso na. Kakausapin ko rin naman siya,” the 31-year-old cager said. “I think coach Tim is putting him on the spot na talaga. I’m happy for him. It’s a big weapon rin for us na si Scottie mailabas talaga yung totoong laro niya.”

Tenorio welcomes Thompson’s development so much that he’s ready to give way to Thompson as his backup beginning in the Governors’ Cup.

“It’s either magba-back up ako or magsasabay kami ni Scottie kasi yung nga, fast-paced kami ngayon, so okay lang na mag-small lineup,” Tenorio said. “Hindi ko pa alam ang mangyayari, but definitely, Scottie deserves to be in the starting lineup.”
