Ginebra castoffs in Barako lineup weren't out to prove a point, says Koy Banal

COACH Koy Banal played down insinuations former Ginebra players now with Barako Bull made a statement in the Energy’s stunning upset of the fancied Kings on Halloween in the Smartbro-PBA Philippine Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena.

He stressed there was hardly any talk inside the team dugout among the players, especially former Gin Kings, on the need to prove themselves about their one-time mother ballclub.

Banal even stressed playing with too much emotion sometimes costs a team to lose a game.

“You are so eager to prove something 'yun. You will be too emotional, you will be tighter. Kaya hindi yun ang motivation namin. Hindi yun ang sinasabi namin sa team na, ‘Hey, let’s try to make a statement here.”

At least seven former Ginebra players are now with Barako Bull led by former Gilas Pilipinas stalwart JC Intal, who led the Energy with 22 points, including nine in the second quarter to spark the team’s comeback from a 27-6 deficit in the opening period.

Other ex-Kings who are now wearing Energy jerseys include Josh Urbiztondo, Emman Monfort, Chico Lanete, Willy Wilson, James Forrester, and Mac Baracael.

With the exception of Forrester who did not see action, the rest played major roles and minutes in the stunning comeback win.

Outside of Intal, the five other former Kings combined for 27 points, with Lanete and Baracael both ending up with eight.

But Banal said the Energy treated the Ginebra game just like any other.

“We treated this game just like we’re gonna face a Blackwater team or a Mahindra team,” he stressed. “Kahit sino ‘yung kalaban namin, the same thing, same game plan, same game face, and same emotional preparation.”
