Glimmer of hope for Willie Miller as KIA interested in signing jobless two-time PBA MVP

HOPING to put a semblance of stability to its sputtering drive, KIA Motors said it is interested in signing veteran free agent Willie Miller with four games to go in its Philippine Cup elimination schedule.

KIA team manager Eric Pineda said the expansion team is exploring the possibility of signing Miller, who was left without a team prior to the season after being left unsigned by Barako Bull.

Pineda said Miller's offense can be a major boost for the Manny Pacquiao-led Sorento, who have dropped six successive games after winning their season opener against fellow expansion team Blackwater.

“Pinaga-aralan namin kung sa last four games ba (to sign Miller). Siyempre, maganda yung may opensa niya (Miller) dahil dun kami may kahinaan saka pakiramdam namin makakatulong siya,” Pineda told

The 37-year-old Miller averaged 9.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 23 minutes of action while playing for Barako Bull last season. He was not re-signed when his contract expired last August.

The Sorento, who are coming off a 71-87 loss to Barako Bull on Sunday, are currently in 11th place in the standings, just half a game behind Barako (1-5) and half a game ahead of winless Blackwater (0-6).

Still, Pacquiao's team is still very much in the hunt for a place in the playoffs since only two teams will be eliminated at the end of the single-round eliminations.

On Monday, Miller, 37, told he still wants to play but plans to drive one of his four taxi units, partly to stay busy but also to augment the family income which took a major hit after he was left unsigned by Barako.

KIA’s last four games will be against San Miguel Beer on Wednesday, Purefoods Star (Nov. 26), Meralco (Dec. 3) and NLEX on Dec. 7 - match-ups which Pineda felt Miller's scoring skills can be put to goos use.

“Medyo mabibigat kasi ang mga makakalaban naming pero depende sa usapan ng mga big bosses in consultation with the coaching staff,” added Pineda, whose team is set to leave on Saturday to Macau to support Pacquiao.
