TnT rookie Kevin Alas says no ax to grind with Rain or Shine as he chases first PBA title

ROOKIE Kevin Alas said he has yet to hear it so far from former coach Yeng Guiao as Game One of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals between Talk ‘N Text and Rain or Shine came to a close.

Hopefully, there would be none for the rest of the best-of-seven title series as the combo guard out of Letran parted ways with Guiao and the Elasto Painters in good terms.

“So far, wala pa naman,” he said giggling when asked if Guiao had already thrown some choice words in his direction during the course of the series opener on Wednesday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.

“Maayos naman kasi kaming naghiwalay,” said the 21-year-old rookie. “Halos lahat naman naging ka-close ko na rin sa Rain or Shine, e.”

The son of Alaska deputy coach Louie Alas was picked No. 2 overall by Rain or Shine in last year’s Rookie Draft, but was shipped to NLEX after a month with the Elasto Painters for the team’s 2015 first-round pick.

Talk ‘N Text then acquired him just before the season kicked off as the Tropang Texters sent Nino Canaleta to NLEX, with Blackwater acting as conduit and acquiring Larry Rodriguez.

But despite being traded, Alas said he has no ax to grind against Guiao and the Elasto Painters.

“Sa akin masaya naman ako kasi na-trade ako hindi dahil sa ayaw nila sa akin. Nagkataon na loaded sila (Rain or Shine) sa guards kaya ako na-trade,” said the young guard, who finished with five points, three rebounds, and two assists in his first Finals appearance as a pro in the Tropang Texters’ 99-92 win.

“Mas better chance sa akin yun (to have a playing time). Kaya thankful pa rin ako sa kanila.”

He also downplayed insinuations that he has something to prove against his former team.

“Wala naman. Gusto ko lang laruin yung laro ko talaga,” he said. “Pag iniisip mo kasi `yung revenge (factor), lalong sasama lang ang laro ko.”
