ANTIPOLO – June Mar Fajardo welcomed the extra rest he received in San Miguel Beer’s 109-97 win over Alaska in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Saturday night as he continues to recover from a flu that struck him this week.

Coming in averaging 30.5 minutes in his first seven games this conference, the reigning MVP played less than 16 minutes on Saturday after missing the Beermen’s last two practices due to his illness.

Alex Cabagnot, Marcio Lassiter, and Chris Ross picked up the slack left by Fajardo, who still suited up and contributed five points and six boards.

“Oo (masaya sa extra rest),” Fajardo said. “Maganda naman nilaro ng iba, nag-step up naman lahat eh.”

SMB coach Leo Austria, though, almost fielded Fajardo, who came in averaging 13.6 points and 8.1 boards, back in midway through the final frame, but eventually decided against after seeing his team maintain a sizable cushion.

“Nakita niya na malaki naman lamang, so pinahinga naman niya ako,” Fajardo said.

“Sana makabalik na ako next week,” the 27-year-old Cebu pride added. “Kasi mahirap talaga pag nagkasakit, parang nilalanta ka tapos iba yung bigat ng katawan mo. Sina-sinus pa nga ako eh. Pero okay lang, pahinga naman kami bukas.”

That’s good news as he continues to recover from “lagnat laki.”

“Oo nga eh, baka lalaki pa ako,” the 6-foot-10 cager joked.
