Gilas gunner Jeff Chan refuses to blame fatigue for poor shooting night for Rain or Shine

JEFF Chan isn’t about to blame physical or mental fatigue for his poor shooting night when Rain or Shine fell against San Miguel Beer, 87-79, in the two teams’ debut in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Chan, the Elasto Painters’s celebrated left-handed gunner, shot just 3-of-10 from the field against the Beermen and failed to step up in the absence of combo guard Paul Lee, who hyperextended his right knee early in the second period.

Lee failed to return after hurting his knee, joining Chris Tiu (hamstring) at the sidelines.

The 6-foot-2 Chan denied fatigue had something to do with his performance, saying he has had enough rest following his stint with Gilas Pilipinas in the Fiba World Cup in Spain and the Asian Games in South Korea.

“Ayos naman (break), pero parang bitin lang. Kailangan eh,” Chan said of the need to suit up against the Beermen as Rain or Shine was also without big guard Gabe Norwood, who just arrived from a brief vacation in the US after likewise suiting up for the national team during the off season.

But Chan refused to use his lack of rest as an excuse and instead, blamed the team’s inability to convert its foul shots for the loss against the Beermen.

“Yung free throws, 50 percent lang kami. Eh nung nag-team building kami, ang target namin 75 percent, eh siguro kung eight free throws ang na-shoot namin, panalo pa kami,” rued the 31-year-old native of Bacolod.

Rain or Shine missed 15 of 31 attempts from the foul line, with big man Beau Belga and guard Ryan Arana combining for 0-of-10 that hastened the Elasto Painters’ downfall.

Chan vowed to come out stronger when the team returns to action on Friday against expansion squad Blackwater, which is coming off a 66-80 decision against Kia during the opener of the league’s 40th season Sunday night at the Philippine Arena.
