JEFF Chan and Chris Ross downplayed the physical plays between the two of them which marred Rain or Shine’s 99-84 rout of San Miguel in the main game of the Smart Bro-PBA Philippine Cup Wednesday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The two wingmen said the shoving and a little bit of trash talking were all part of the emotional game where the solo lead in the season-opening conference was at stake.

Ross even went to the extent of saying the two of them are friends off court.

“Jeff is one of my good friends and we’re just having some fun,” said Ross afterwards.

Chan said for his part,“konting girian lang. Wala naman yun after the game. Nagbatian pa nga kami.”

Ross was tasked to take on Chan on several instances, and in one sequence, the two bumped each other that left the Rain or Shine gunner down on the floor just shortly after draining a long three-pointer late in the fourth quarter.

The San Miguel guard was later seen making a gesture on Chan as if telling him to lift more weights.

“Hindi ko nga maintidihan e.kasi ,medyo malayo yung pagitan (namin),” said Chan of Ross’ sign language. “Baka gusto niya sabay kaming mag-weights.”

A laughing Ross later admitted it was really meant to taunt Chan to lift more weights.

“It was like ‘lift some weights’ but it was just fun,” said a smiling Ross. “I wasn’t trying to hurt him or anything. I wasn’t talking bad to him. It was just good talk on the court.”

Despite the on-court antics, both Chan and Ross did play good for their respective teams.

Chan shared scoring honors with Raymond Almazan and Beau Belga with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field, including 3-of-6 from downtown. He also had two rebounds and an assist.

Ross on the other hand, was one six Beermen in double figures with 10 points  on 4-of-9 shooting from the floor, and with five rebounds, and three assists.
