IT looks like Barangay Ginebra will remain cautious in handling the injury of Japeth Aguilar.

Gin Kings coach Tim Cone bared his star big man could sit out their PBA Philippine Cup game against Phoenix on Sunday as he continues to recover from a hyperextended right elbow he hurt in the nine-point win over Blackwater last Friday.

”We’re certainly not ruling out Japeth for tomorrow’s game, but he is doubtful to play,” Cone admitted in a text message to SPIN.ph on the eve of the 6:45 p.m. matchup against the Fuel Masters.

The Gin Kings’ medical team, however, will continue to keep an eye on the injury for Aguilar’s status to be upgraded to a game-time decision.

“We will continue to treat and rehab him through the day and night and he’ll be a game-time decision,” Cone said of the 6-foot-9 slotman, who injured his elbow following an awkward fall from a two-handed breakaway slam late in the first half against the Elite.

The potential absence of the 29-year-old Aguilar, who skipped their practice on Saturday, leaves Gin Kings’ playmakers LA Tenorio and Scottie Thompson shouldering more of the load against a Fuel Masters side that’s also relying on their guards and wingmen in Simon Enciso, JC Intal, Cyrus Baguio, and rookie Matthew Wright.

The Gin Kings and Fuel Masters sport similar 5-4 win-loss records, also tied with TNT Katropa and Rain or Shine in third spot, and the victor in their matchup will formalize their entry to the quarterfinals.
