JAMES Yap doesn’t mind being held scoreless for the first time in a Rain or Shine jersey, so long as the Elasto Painters continue winning in the PBA Governors Cup.

The two-time MVP failed to score in nine minutes of play in the team’s 92-88 win over previously unbeaten Star Hotshots on Sunday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

It was the first time in more than a year Yap, who recently became the latest player to join the elite 10,000-point club, failed to make a basket in a game since July 24, 2016 when Star beat Globalport in the same season-ending meet.

It doesn’t bother him though, as he found consolation in the fact that Rain or Shine registered a third straight win to raise its record to 4-2 overall.

“Okay lang naman sa akin yun especially nananalo yung team,” said Yap, who was 0-for-2 from the field and contributed a single rebound, assist, block shot, and steal in limited playing time.

He credits defense for Rain or Shine’s resurgence in the mid-season tournament, echoing the line of coach Caloy Garcia.

“More active kami sa defense,” the 36-year-old pride of Escalante, Negros Occidental said. “Nagsasalita kami sa loob at may communication. Sana mapagpatuloy lang namin ito.”

While the win came at the expense of Star, Yap’s former team, he said there’s nothing really into it.

Yap was actually pleased seeing the Hotshots rally from as much as a 20-point deficit (52-32) in the third quarter as it tested the character of the Elasto Painters in the endgame.

“Maganda rin yung nangyari na nakahabol yun Star. For me gusto ko yung ganun para ma-practice kami ng ganun,” he said.

“Kasi pag nahahabol kami nagpa-panic kami. Kasi minsan nakakalimutan namin yung sistema pag nahahabol na kami. Pero itong game na ito, nag-stick kami sa sistema.”
