GLOBALPORT banked on its explosive backcourt tandem as it turned back Star, 101-94, to get on the winning tack in the PBA Philippine Cup on Friday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The Batang Pier atoned for a sluggish showing in 97-86 loss to San Miguel Beer in Davao last Saturday with a dynamic performance against the Hotshots to pull away late.

Stanley Pringle sustained his stellar play with a game-high 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting, five assists, four boards, and one steal in 37 minutes.

The Filipino-American guard combined with Terrence Romeo in leading the Batang Pier’s balanced, high-octane offense that saw seven players scoring at least eight points.

“Na-push namin yung panic button kasi hindi pwede maging zero-two,” Batang Pier coach Pido Jarencio said. “Nag-respond yung mga players after yung talo namin.”

The Batang Pier’s offense stemmed from a pesky defense that forced the Hotshots to 22 turnovers that turned into 28 points off errors and 14 off the fastbreak.

Romeo, the Gilas Pilipinas crowd darling, bounced back from a lackluster display in the opener, tallying 20 markers in 25 minutes off the bench for the Batang Pier, who dealt the Hotshots their second loss in three games.

The Hotshots likewise drew a significant contribution from all around as Marc Pingris led five players who scored in twin digits, an effort that still proved insufficient.

James Yap reached double digits with 10 markers, but it was his lowest output in three games under rookie coach Jason Webb.

Holding on to a precarious one-point lead entering after the third quarter, the Batang Pier embarked on a back-breaking 17-2 run, capped by two Pringle charities that gave his team its biggest lead at 91-75, a cushion that was too much to overcome for the Hotshots.
