Ginebra seeks to sustain momentum against surging Alaska in battle of no-quit squads
Tim Cone is confident his weary Gin Kings squad is up to the challenge of matching the Aces' energy to build their first win run of the season Jerome Ascano

BARANGAY Ginebra seeks to get its rhythm going as it plays the second of back-to-back games on Sunday night against fellow surging team Alaska in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Fresh from an 89-70 dismantling of Mahindra last Friday, the Gin Kings take the court just two days later seeking to put up their first winning streak this season after the 6:45 p.m. matchup against the Aces in a main game of the doubleheader that also features an anticipated encounter between Rain or Shine and Star.

“Quick turnaround game for us and we have to battle Alaska’s pressure and energy pa,” Gin Kings coach Tim Cone said on Saturday. “It’s a tough assignment, but I believe we’re up to the challenge.”

“We’re hoping we can play off the momentum of our second half performance against Mahindra,” he added, referring to the Gin Kings’ last two quarters where they outscored the Floodbuster, 57-43, to pull away from a tight contest.

The Aces, though, are also starting to build momentum, having won their last two games, the latest a stunning 81-79 victory over Meralco in a game where they came back from nine points down in the last two minutes.

The Aces, who are tied with the Gin Kings with a 2-2 win-loss record, turned to their trademark suffocating full-court defense to complete the comeback – and that’s what they’ll keep doing against Ginebra.

“Ginebra is playing great and with their tremendous level of talent and great coaching, they are back as a premier team in the league,” Aces coach Alex Compton said. “We will play Alaska basketball for forty-eight minutes, pressing and playing hard until the final buzzer sounds.”

“I expect this to be one of the more exciting games for PBA fans to watch at this point in the season,” he added.
