BARANGAY Ginebra delivered at crunch time to repel a pesky Blackwater side, 89-79, and get back on track in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Sunday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig.

The Gin Kings found themselves in a nip-and-tuck battle against an Elite side that refused to budge, before banking on a late surge to score their fourth victory in seven games.

Othyus Jeffers and LA Tenorio combined for 15 points in the payoff period to lead the Gin Kings, who dealt the Elite their fourth defeat against three wins.

“It wasn’t a pretty game by any means, but that’s okay,” Gin Kings coach Tim Cone said. “We’re trying to learn how to play ugly and win ugly.”

“That’s what you have to do in the playoffs: you have to be able to play that defensive-oriented, grind-it-out type of game,” he added.

Jeffers capped a 14-4 run with a stab that put the Gin Kings up by double digits, 84-73, after the Elite nudged to within one, 68-69, off an MJ Rhett slam.
