MERALCO not only lost an inside presence in Ranidel de Ocampo, it also missed an outside threat in Garvo Lanete.

The 29-year-old shooting guard missed his second game for the Bolts in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Friday night as he continues to recover from a severely sprained shooting hand, which remains wrapped in a bandage almost two weeks since suffering the injury.

He hurt his right hand while the team was deep in training for the opening of the second conference, joining De Ocampo (Achilles) on the Meralco injury list.

“Malas ng timing kung kelan mag-o-opening doon pa ako nadale,” said the shooting guard from Ormoc, Leyte.

“Gustung-gusto ko na ngang maglaro lalo na ngayon natalo kami,” added the former San Beda stalwart after Meralco’s 86-85 loss to Globalport at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

In the absence of Lanete, the Bolts had to rely on KG Canaleta's perimeter game. The veteran forward didn't disappoint after going 7-of-12 from three-point range to finish with a game-high 28 points, though the effort fell short as Meralco lost for the first time after winning its initial outing against Columbian Dyip.

Lanete said the injury was on his index finger, which was twice hit by the ball during practice. Initially, there was swelling on the injured hand, but it has since subsided.

“Namaga siya nung una, pero ngayon yung pain na lang ang hindi nawawala,” he said while showing the injured hand. “Yun na lang ang hinihintay ko (mawala yung pain). Pag siguro wala na, tuluy-tuloy na yun.”

But at the moment, he’s yet to join the Bolts in practice.

“Masakit pa kapag humahawak ako ng bola at tsaka pag tumitira ako,” said Lanete. “Nakakatakbo naman ako, so yung cardio and conditioning ko andun.”

Fortunately, no operation is needed for the injury to heal.

“Negative naman yung X-ray and sa ultrasound nakita na maga lang sa loob,” he said. “Time lang talaga ang kailangan. Pahinga lang para mag heal.”
