Teary-eyed Garvo Lanete offers no excuses after endgame miscue proves costly for NLEX

GARVO Lanete was left in tears after he botched NLEX's drive for a game-winner late in regulation, leading to a heartbreaking 126-121 loss to TnT Katropa in overtime on Friday night in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

The sophomore guard quietly left the Road Warriors’ dugout at the Mall of Asia Arena after the team – as expected – got a tonque-lashing from coach Yeng Guiao for letting an almost certain win slip away.

He politely begged off from a post-game interview, asking for understanding following the painful loss that saw NLEX blow a huge 29-point, third-quarter lead.

“Next time na lang po sir, pasensya na,” he told SPIN.ph in a soft-spoken voice. “But no excuses, sir.”

The sorry play came in the final 7.9 seconds of regulation and the score tied at 113-all. Kevin Alas let the shot clock tick away before luring three TnT defenders on a drive and dishing off to a wide-open Lanete.

Unfortunately, Lanete failed to catch the ball and lost it to the sidelines.

As the Texters sued for timeout to map out their final play, Guiao was heard on national television giving Lanete a mouthful during the Road Warriors’ huddle while questioning his heart.

Ironically, it was also Lanete who got lost in the defensive rotation in another crucial play, leading to Ranidel De Ocampo's game-tying three-pointer.

Although Lanete felt the pass was a little bit low, he repeated there was no excuse at all.

He also added he failed to get any rhythm for the entire game, noting, ‘Ang lamig ko sir buong laro.’

In 13 minutes that he played, Lanete finished with only a single point and was 0 of 2 from the field. He had two rebounds and four assists, but committed four turnovers – the second most for the team after import Wayne Chism as NLEX committed more errors than TnT, 23-13.
