Pumaren, Cortez the least surprised as Terrence Romeo puts on show for Gilas

GLOBALPORT practice on Thursday afternoon at Gold’s Gym Sheridan seemed to be a breeze as the Batang Pier were made to go through their paces in the middle of a long break in the PBA Governors’ Cup.

Mike Cortez, especially, appeared to be enjoying the relatively light session – after being used to hellish scrimmages shadowing Terrence Romeo.

The 36-year-old Cortez saw a reminder of Romeo’s brilliance as his celebrated teammate put on his peak performance in Gilas Pilipinas’ 96-87 upset of China in the Fiba Asia Cup opener the night before.

“Not surprised by @tbvromeo performance... I gotta guard that every day in practice!!” Cortez posted on his Twitter account moments after the win on Wednesday night.

GlobalPort coach Franz Pumaren was also hardly surprised to see Romeo break ankles and eventually the Chinese hearts.

“He showed what he’s capable of doing,” Pumaren said after practice. “If you notice, down the stretch, they used him as a two-guard because they needed some scoring coming from the other players.”

Romeo is exactly the same when he’s with his mother club.

“I guess Terrence was just being Terrence,” Pumaren said. “I think it’s damned if you, damned if you don’t – that’s probably his philosophy. He took some contested shots, but just imagine, if he missed those shots? It’s going to be the other way around yung storya.”

“But he made those shots, he made those big baskets,” he added. “I guess he prevented us from collapsing in the game.”

And Pumaren can only hope that the in-form Romeo can carry over his top form when he returns to GlobalPort.

“I notice that he’s a different Terrence Romeo compared to last conference,” Pumaren said. “I think he’s in much-better shape."
