SAN Miguel Beer underlined its focus on its ambitious PBA grand slam bid as it held practice on Maundy Thursday at the Acropolis gym in Libis, Quezon City.

While most teams were on vacation, the Beermen chose to train ahead of a crucial Commissioner’s Cup matchup against sister squad Star on Easter Sunday.

“We have to,” SMB coach Leo Austria said after practice. “Alam naman nila yung situation eh.”

“Kayo nga, nandito rin, nagtatrabaho eh,” he added with a laugh, referring to his interviewers.

The Beermen’s eyes are so fixed on the prize as their two-hour practice was extended for 30 minutes and capped it with a grueling planting-rice drill.

SMB, which had a short break on Holy Wednesday, will also practice on Good Friday and Black Saturday.

“Yung penitensya namin, ngayon namin ginawa at bukas,” Austria said.

“Bumawi na lang sila (after the conference),” he was quick to add. “I’m sure, after this conference, mayroong long break.”

“But this time, alam namin na we have another opportunity, so kailangan i-take advantage namin.”

Arwind Santos was understandably absent as he oversaw the cremation of his recently departed mother, Araceli.

Import Tyler Wilkerson, on the other hand, had to leave training early as the SMB import was hit with food poisoning, while June Mar Fajardo was in attendance, but only did strengthening on his injured knee.
