Nothing goes right for Alaska and Alex Compton right on coach's 42nd birthday

OTHER than seeing Alaska’s five-game winning streak come to an end, coach Alex Compton got one more piece of bad news right on his birthday.

A hurting back.

“I have back spasms,” admitted the Alaska mentor, who struggled just to walk the sidelines during the Aces’ 116-96 loss to the Beermen on Wednesday on the day he turned 42.

Compton did not stay long inside the Alaska dugout following the loss. He hurriedly left the Smart Araneta Coliseum shortly after the team said its prayers as the Aces dropped to 5-2 – in a tie with Meralco for second spot – and lost for the first time after a run of five victories.

“Wala naman siyang sinabi. Basta nag-text na lang siya kung what time magkikita yung team (on Thursday),” said his deputy Louie Alas.

Asked if Compton got angry at the team, Alas said no, adding “baka bukas pa magagalit yun sa amin.”

It was but unfortunate that the Aces played this bad right on their coach’s special day.

“Parang di Alaska team yung naglaro,” admitted Alas. “Nag-struggle kami overall."

The scenario wasn’t lost on San Miguel coach Leo Austria himself.

“Birthday ni Alex Compton ngayon. Ang sama nga lang na pa-birthday ko sa kanya,” said Austria, who also celebrated his birthday just last Tuesday.
