After winning a hat-trick of awards, Chris Ross wishes for another shot at grand slam

THERE is always a next season to try and go for a grand slam for San Miguel.

Chris Ross looks forward to completing what the Beermen failed to accomplish this year as he longed for another shot at a sweep of all three conferences of the PBA’s 43rd season.

The Beermen came short of that goal this season as they failed to make the finals of the Governors Cup after they were bundled off by defending champion Barangay Ginebra.

Still, Ross considered the season a memorable one for the proud franchise after SMB bagged the Jun Bernardino Perpetual Trophy for winning a third straight Philippine Cup crown, ruled the Commissioner’s Cup, before star center June Mar Fajardo beati out teammates Alex Cabagnot and Ross himself for a fourth consecutive MVP trophy.

“It will definitely be a season to remember for me,” said Ross in a message to from Texas, USA where he is currently on a vacation.

“Hopefully, we can have an encore next season and finish what we weren’t able to accomplish this season.”

Ross was a strong contender for the MVP award for the first time in his career, but didn't mind losing to his 6-foot-10 teammate.

He did win a treble by taking the Most Improved Player award as well as places in the Mythical First team and the All-Defensive team.

“It’s a blessing to be up for the MVP award and even more of a pleasure to be competing for it with my brothers,” stressed Ross, who was finals MVP of the all-Filipino conference for the second straight season and Best Player of the Conference – his first in the league – during the Commissioner’s Cup.

The 32-year-old guard said the success of the Beermen this season was the fruit of the collective effort of the entire team and not just him, Fajardo, or Cabagnot.

“It’s a testament to the season that we had because it was really a historic one for our franchise. It’s not just us three,” he said.

Ross won’t be back in the country until November.
