IN playoff mode early, Chris Newsome has helped power Meralco to big wins on the final stretch of the eliminations and into the top spot in the PBA Governors’ Cup quarterfinals, earning the nod for PBA Press Corps Player of the Week for the period of Sept. 18 to 24.

The 6-foot-2 Newsome averaged 21 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 1.0 steal as Meralco beat GlobalPort and grand slam-seeking San Miguel Beer.

The Bolts cliched the top spot with a 9-2 win-loss record.

The 2016 PBA Rookie of the Year fired 28 points, hauled down seven rebounds and issued five assists to lead Meralco to victory over the Batang Pier.

Two days later, Newsome shot 7 for 10 for 14 points, while adding six assists and four rebounds as Meralco stunned San Miguel Beer.

The 27-year-old Newsome was picked over Star veteran guards Mark Barroca and PJ Simon, Rain or Shine’s Raymond Almazan, Maverick Ahanmisi and Don Trollano.

The Bolts, enjoying a twice-to-beat edge, only need to win once on Tuesday when they clash with no. 8 seed Blackwater Elite to advance to the semifinals.
