CARLO Lastimosa played down getting the better of his individual matchup against Terrence Romeo as Blackwater lost to GlobalPort, 120-105, in the Smart Bro-PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday.

The Elite guard was in a zone against the Batang Pier, pumping a career-best 31 points, including 23 in the first half where he already eclipsed his previous high of 19 done earlier this conference.

Lastimosa, nephew of PBA great Jojo, also registered four boards, four assists, and one steal in 32 minutes of play as he edged Romeo in a virtual individual duel after the GlobalPort stalwart finished with 26 points in 22 minutes off the bench.

“Oo naman (na-challenge), pero magkakaibigan naman kami ‘nun eh,” Lastimosa said of his matchup with one of the league’s best playmakers.

Lastimosa stressed his motivation was for his team, which reeled to a fourth straight loss and sixth overall in seven games.

“I want to contribute para sa team at hindi para sa sarili lang,” the former College of St. Benilde star said. “I just want to be a playmaker sometimes.”

“Inspired lang talaga ako ngayon, kasi kailangan ko magpakita kasi ayaw ko palaging talo na lang,” he added. “Pero kapos pa rin. Sana next game.”

Romeo was hardly surprised that Lastimosa would match – and even surpass – his offensive brilliance, at least for the night.

“Matagal ko na kilala si Carlo, so alam namin na yung isa’t-isa, capable na pumutok at any given time,” the Batang Pier star said. “Masaya, magkaibigan kami pero nagko-compete kami ng sobra pag nasa court. Yun ang gusto ko.”
