Calvin Abueva says towel-waving bench dance mere celebration - not taunting

WHETHER on the court or on the bench, Calvin Abueva never fails to get his share of attention.

'The Beast' punctuated Alaska's big win over Ginebra with a tower-waving dance on the bench, drawing cheers from Aces fans from the more than 12,000 that showed up at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday night.

Abueva, however, insisted he was merely happy with Alaska's resurgence after a 0-2 start and wasn't out to taunt Ginebra and its fans after the Kings suffered their heaviest loss this season.

Hindi naman pang asar 'yun (sa Ginebra). Bakit? Masama bang sumayaw?” Abueva snapped back at resporters. “Wala lang, feel ko lang (sumayaw).”

The former San Sebastian star, after all, has all the reasons to be happy after sparking the Aces to three successive wins since coming back from an injury that sidelined him for two games.

“Syempre, noong pagbalik ko after the two losses sabi ko, kailangan natin manalo end of this year,” said Abueva, who scored 12 points on 6-for-10 shooting in the 101-86 win over Ginebra.

With momentum on their side, Abueva now wants to see Alaska beat TNT Katropa on Friday to make it a truly merry Christmas for the Aces and their fans.

“Sa Friday (against TNT) kailangan namin manalo para sa 2017 maganda ang baon namin,” he said. “Ang mindset ko is struggle kasi kami ngayon, kaya kailangan ma-convert namin ang saya this Christmas.”
